The Kind of Coaching I Believe In
Choosing a coach is about far more than finding someone who can write a training programme.
It’s about finding someone whose approach matches the way you want to learn, develop and progress.
After more than 20 years of coaching people from complete beginners to athletes competing on national and world stages, I’ve realised something important:
The best coaching isn’t about telling people what to do. It’s about helping them understand why they’re doing it.
Coaching Should Build More Than Strength
Strength is often the reason people first reach out.
They want to lift heavier, improve their fitness, prepare for competition or simply feel healthier and more confident.
Those are all fantastic goals.
But I believe good coaching should leave you with far more than stronger muscles.
It should leave you with greater confidence, better decision-making, improved knowledge and the ability to train successfully for years to come.
My goal is to help every client become more capable—not just inside the gym, but in the way they approach challenges outside of it as well.
Education Over Instruction
One of the principles that underpins my coaching is education.
I don’t want clients to blindly follow a programme.
I want them to understand it.
That means explaining:
- Why a particular exercise has been chosen.
- How progression works.
- The principles behind effective nutrition.
- The importance of recovery.
- How mindset influences long-term performance.
- Why consistency always beats perfection.
When people understand the process, they’re more confident in the decisions they make and far more likely to stay consistent.
Strength Coaching That Fits Real Life
Most people don’t have unlimited time.
They have careers, families, responsibilities and busy schedules.
That’s why I don’t believe in creating programmes that only work under perfect conditions.
Whether you train with me in person in Chelmsford or through online coaching, the goal is the same:
Create a structured plan that works around your life while continuing to move you towards your goals.
Consistency isn’t about finding more motivation.
It’s about creating a system that’s realistic enough to follow every week.
Coaching Every Level of Athlete
One of the things I enjoy most about coaching is that the same principles apply whether someone is completely new to strength training or preparing for international competition.
I’ve been fortunate to coach beginners who simply wanted to feel stronger and healthier, alongside athletes competing at national and world level in strength sports.
Although their goals are different, the coaching philosophy remains exactly the same.
Build strong movement.
Develop confidence.
Educate throughout the process.
Create sustainable progress.
Long-Term Success
Quick fixes rarely create lasting results.
Real progress comes from building habits, improving understanding and trusting a structured process over time.
That’s the type of coaching I believe in.
It’s not about chasing the latest trend or finding a shortcut.
It’s about helping people become stronger, healthier and more confident in a way they can sustain for years to come.
