Find Your Perfect Squat Stance
Finding Your Perfect Squat Stance: A Simple Guide for Busy Lifters
If you’ve been training for a while but still struggle with your squat, whether it’s hitting depth, staying balanced, or feeling confident at the bottom.. you’re not alone.
Many lifters, especially those balancing busy careers and family life, waste months trying to force a squat stance that simply doesn’t work for their body. The truth is, your stance plays a huge role in how strong, safe, and efficient your squat feels.
The good news? You can find your ideal squat stance in minutes using two quick, effective tests.
Why Squat Stance Matters
Your squat stance affects:
- Depth – Whether you can reach proper range of motion without compromising form.
- Balance – Staying stable from start to finish, even under heavy load.
- Power – Being in the most mechanically efficient position to move weight safely.
- Injury Risk – Reducing strain on the knees, hips, and lower back.
As a strength and conditioning coach, I see this every week most form breakdowns start with the setup, and stance is one of the biggest culprits.
The Jump Test
- Stand tall and relax your lower body from the hips down
- Do a small vertical jump, letting your feet and hips land naturally.
- The position you land in is your natural starting point — your hips are in an open, powerful position that will help you reach depth with less restriction.
The Balance Test
- Start in your natural jump-test stance.
- Close your eyes (make sure you’re safe to do this) and gently rock forwards and backwards.
- Adjust your feet slightly outwards or inwards until you feel perfectly balanced without tipping.
This is your perfect squat stance — strong, stable, and ready to move.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
❌ Forcing your feet into a narrow stance because you’ve seen others do it.
❌ Turning your toes excessively out or in.
❌ Ignoring how your hips, knees, and ankles feel in the setup.
Squat Technique Is Personal
There’s no “one-size-fits-all” stance. Your limb length, mobility, and training history all play a role. That’s why it’s so important to test, not guess.
Inside JC Performance, I work with busy lifters aged 30–45 to fine-tune their squat technique so they can:
- Move with confidence
- Build real, long-term strength
- Reduce injury risk
- Train efficiently without wasting time
I review training footage every week for my coaching team — helping each lifter build safe, powerful, and repeatable movement patterns.
